Dried Figs

Posted in Diet & Nutrition on May 17th, 2006 by Paul

I recently started incorporating dried figs into my diet. Dried figs are low in fat and sodium, they contain no saturated fat or cholesterol, and they are a good source of fiber. Dried figs are sweet and have unusual texture due to the seeds found within. I eat a lot of dried fruits but figs are my favorite. I chop them up and put them in desserts, cereal, yogurt, or whatever else seems appropriate. Like most dried fruits, dried figs are very portable and I pack them when going camping or on day-trips such as hiking or biking.

There are many varieties of figs and California grows many of them. The two most common are the golden, slightly nutty-flavored Calimyrna and the dark, sweet Mission. Dried figs can be found in most grocery stores so pick some up next time you are at the store.
