Turkey Burger Recipe
One of my favorite meals as a kid was my dad’s grilled hamburgers. My dad didn’t cook very often but when it involved the grill he took command. He always used charcoal and it seemed like dinner time would never come as we waited for the coals to get ready. I liked my hamburgers medium with a thick slice of tomato and red onion.
As much as I loved hamburgers as a kid I wanted to find a healthier, grown-up version. I stopped eating red meat a few years ago and started using ground turkey as a nice alternative to ground beef. Ground turkey can make some really wonderful burgers with just a little bit of help. Ground turkey can get pretty dry but with the addition of a few key ingredients this problem can be minimized. Now I eat turkey burgers about once a week. Here is the recipe:
- 1lb. Ground Turkey
- 1 tbsp. Worcestershire Sauce.
- 1 tbsp. Dijon-style mustard
- 1 tbsp. Horseradish
- 1 cup breadcrumbs. (I use seasoned breadcrumbs.)
- 1/2 c. shredded zucchini
- 1 egg
Combine all ingredients in a large bowl. Shape mixture into 4 patties. Heat some olive oil in a grill pan on medium heat and cook for about 6 minutes on each side or until no longer pink in the middle. Serve on whole-wheat buns. For toppings I recommend tomato and red onion, and spinach or sprouts. I still like mine with a thick slice of tomato and red onion.
