Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) is a fat-soluble vitamin-like substance that is made naturally by the body. CoQ10 was first discovered by researchers in 1957 and was named Ubiquinone but is also commonly referred to as Q10, CoQ10, and Vitamin Q10. CoQ10 has many beneficial properties and can be taken as a supplement to increase levels of CoQ10 in the body.

  • Antioxidant - CoQ10 is a powerful antioxidant that plays an important role in cellular energy production and cell growth. The body utilizes it to produce energy for cells and to protect cells from damage that may lead to cancer. CoQ10 is found in many skincare products that claim to reduce the appearance of wrinkles, help increase collagen and elastin in the skin, and help repair damaged skin cells.
  • Immune System – CoQ10 enhances the effectiveness of the immune system. Some studies on animals have shown that CoQ10 helps the immune system by making the body better able to resist certain infections and types of cancer.
  • Heart Health – CoQ10 has been proven effective for treatment of heart disease by preventing cholesterol build-up in the arteries, helping to lower blood pressure, and increasing available blood and oxygen to the heart. Heart muscle cells contain the largest amount of mitochondria of any muscle in the body and have high concentrations of CoQ10. Studies have confirmed the effectiveness of CoQ10 in patients with heart disease by significantly improving heart muscle function.
  • Cancer Treatment Relief – CoQ10 is being studied in the treatment of cancer and in the relief of side effects caused by some cancer treatments.
  • Energy Levels – Since CoQ10 aids in mitochondria function it is thought to improve endurance and boost energy levels for the elderly and chronicly ill.

Coenzyme Q10 levels begin to drop in most people over 30. Coenzyme Q10 can be obtained from oily fish and organ meats but it is hard to get medicinal amounts from dietary sources alone. Coenzyme Q10 can also be obtained as a supplement found at most drug stores, health-food stores, and in larger grocery stores. Since Coenzyme Q10 is sold as a dietary supplement rather than a drug it is not regulated by the US Food and Drug Administration.
