Sugar in the RawI like to keep my ingredients as natural as possible and sugar is no exception. I started buying Sugar in the Raw a few years ago in an effort to expand my growing list of natural foods.

Sugar in the Raw is a natural, unrefined sugar made from sugar cane grown in Maui. The distinctive color and subtle molasses flavor sets this sugar apart from standard issue white sugar. Sugar in the Raw is actually Turbinado sugar packaged and marketed as Sugar in the Raw. The term Turbinado comes from the technique used in the making of this sugar (the sugar is spun in a cylinder or turbine).

The sugar is made by extracting the juice from the sugar cane and then crystallizing it through evaporation. The crystals are rinsed with small amounts of water to remove just enough stickiness to make the product granular. Due to the processing method, Turbinado sugar retains some small amounts of nutrients. I believe that these nutrients contribute to the advantages of this sugar over refined white sugar.

I use it to sweeten my coffee and tea, as a replacement for white sugar in recipes and to sprinkle over my cereal. It works great as a topping on muffins, cookies and other baked items.
