Avoid Eating 2 Hours before Bedtime

It is common knowledge that eating before bed can lead to weight gain. According to Mikhail Tombak in his book Can We Live 150 Years, the digestive organs do not have the necessary energy to process food at night. The body doesn’t have the opportunity to “burn up” the calories and they turn directly into fat. I personally find this a difficult habit to overcome as I have a weakness for cereal. My Seinfeldian love of cereal allows me to eat cereal any time of the day and unfortunately my favorite time is before I go to bed.

In addition to weight gain, eating right before bed can also effect the quality and length of your sleep. Eating spicy foods or fatty foods one to three hours before bedtime will slow down the emptying of the stomach and can thus lead to heartburn and indigestion. I very rarely have indigestion or heartburn but the only times it does happen is when I eat a rich, spicy meal after about 8:00 PM. I normally eat at about 6:00 PM and something as small as a 2 hour difference can really mess me up.

It is really easy to get into the habit of snacking late in the evening out of habit or boredom. It takes a lot of discipline to train yourself out of this practice but if you are successful then weight loss and better sleep most certainly await you.
