Thatch Control for a Healthy Lawn
I’m not a big fan of lawn maintenance. I know a lot of people who absolutely love it and consider it to be a relaxing and enjoyable activity. I can appreciate what a wonderful thing a well-cared-for lawn can be; I just don’t want to do it. Alas, I must keep my lawn looking as nice as I am capable and therefore it is time for me to do some fall lawn maintenance.
Contrary to popular belief, fall is actually the best time of the year for lawn care. Fertilization, weed and thatch control, planting new lawns, and renovating unhealthy lawns can be done over the next few weeks.
Thatch removal is an important part of fall lawn maintenance. You can dethatch your lawn by raking or in the case of severe soil compaction you can use a technique known as core aeration. Aeration uses a machine that removes plugs of thatch and soil 2 to 3 inches long and deposits them on the lawn. This is more beneficial than power raking because it helps improve the root zone by relieving soil compaction while controlling thatch accumulation. You should only aerate when the grass is actively growing and this can vary depending on where you live.
Aeration machines are found in rental stores and garden supply catalogs. If you are lucky like me you will have a neighbor who rents an aerator every year. I just pitch in for the rental cost and he lets me give my yard a quick once-over. Thankfully, the yard work is almost done for the season. Next year I really need to start looking at condos.
