Get Off the Grid with Amazon Grocery

I recently received an email from Amazon pleasantly reminding me of the launch of Amazon Grocery. Since I am always looking for ways to simplify things I decided to take a look and see if it would work for me. I have been a faithful Amazon customer for many years so buying my groceries isn’t be a big stretch for me. I am mostly concerned with the availability of products and shipping costs.

I was pleasantly surprised as I searched through their selection of more than 14,000 non-perishable items. Browsing for groceries on Amazon isn’t quite like shopping at the store therefore I decided to work my way through my latest shopping list to see if they have everything I normally buy. I easily found all the items I normally buy and I discovered many interesting items that aren’t available at my store. I found the selection of food products to be quite varied, ranging from pantry staples to an impressive selection of smaller, specialty and organic foods. Most of the prices appeared to match, or in some cases, even undercut grocery store sales prices.

One of my main concerns was the cost of shipping. I learned that Amazon Grocery offers Free Super Saver Shipping with all orders of $25 or more and Amazon Prime members ($79 annual fee) receive free second day shipping.

One problem I discovered is that you must purchase some products in larger quantities much like a Costco or Sam’s Club. I’m not sure I would have the space to store all these bulk items. It also wouldn’t be practical for me to purchase some things in bulk as it would take forever for my household to use it up.

Another problem is that Amazon Grocery doesn’t carry everything. For example, they don’t currently offer perishable items like milk, fresh meat, or produce. The reason for this is because they can’t ship those items for free.

Amazon Grocery isn’t going to be for everyone but it is certainly a viable option for me. I feel the seemingly endless selection of products as the big draw for those finicky shoppers out there who like lots of options.
