What Does Fair Trade Certified Mean?
Fair Trade is an approach to sustainable farming and development that aids family farmers in developing countries gain direct access to international markets. Fair Trade also helps these farmers develop the business capacity necessary to compete in the modern global marketplace.
Some of the ways that Fair Trade helps farmers include:
- Help smallholder farmers gain access to needed loans for working capital.
- Help establish direct, long-term trading relationships between buyers and farmers.
- Help farmers and workers receive a fair price for their product.
- Much of the Fair Trade Certified coffee, tea and chocolate is certified organic. This means that the products you buy help maintain biodiversity and help reduce environmental risks.
Currently, more than 600,000 farmers and farm workers in over 32 countries benefit from selling their coffee, tea, cocoa, rice, sugar, and fruit on Fair Trade Certified terms.
The hope is that farmers in the Fair Trade program will be empowered to take care of themselves without developing dependency on foreign aid. These improvements will lead to higher standards of living for family farmers and more sustainable farming practices.
