Local HarvestThe localharvest webpage states, “People worldwide are rediscovering the benefits of buying local food. It is fresher than anything in the supermarket and that means it is tastier and more nutritious. It is also good for your local economy–buying directly from family farmers helps them stay in business.”

Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) is a nationwide program in which you pay a seasonal fee in exchange for weekly or monthly baskets of freshly picked produce, flowers, fruits, eggs, milk, coffee from local organic farms.

Most CSA farms prefer that you pay for the season beforehand, but some farmers will accept payments. Some CSAs also request that members work a few hours on the farm, helping with the harvest, during the growing season. A small price to pay for receiving healthy farm fresh produce at such an affordable price and you get to breathe in some fresh air and get your hands dirty. This would be a great weekend activity for families with children. Kids love visiting farms and it’s good to start teaching the next generation early about locally grown produce and sustainable foods.
