Peat Pellets Kickstart GardeningI wouldn’t exactly say that I have a green thumb, but my gardening skills have been slowly improving over the years. In fact, I currently have quite the thriving herb garden going in my kitchen right now.

I recently started some basil, cilantro, parsley, thyme, and Rosemary for some outdoor pots. Typically I just plant the seeds, add water, cover with some plastic wrap, and put them in the window to get them to germinate. This time around I decided to try some peat starter pellets I found at a local landscape supply store. I was hoping to improve both my yield and shorten the time to germination.

The pellets are used instead of soil for starting seeds. You just place the seed in a small opening in the pellet and place the pellet in a shallow tray with some water. The pellets start to expand immediately once water is added. After the seed has germinated sufficiently you just remove a wrapper and plant it. Very simple.

I put my specimens in a shallow tray with a little water and had seedlings in a few days. This will vary depending on what you are planting of course. I had good luck with all the seeds I was starting with the exception of Rosemary – which is notoriously hard to start anyway.

Basil, cilantro, and parsley are all very easy to grow even for a hack like me, but these handy little pellets really speed the process up quite a bit as well as improve your odds. I was able to find the exact same product I used on Amazon here. Your local nursery probably has something very similar.
