Starbucks Vivanno Nourishing BlendsStarbucks customers have been asking for healthier drink alternatives and the company has responded with a new line of smoothies dubbed Vivanno Nourishing Blends.

The smoothies will contain one whole banana, 16 grams of protein and 5 grams of fiber from a proprietary whey protein and fiber powder. The 16 ounce drinks contain 270 calories and are available in Orange-Mango-Banana and Banana-Chocolate flavors. The drinks also contain no artificial colors, artificial sweeteners or high fructose corn syrup.

According to the Starbucks website the drinks contain the following ingredients:

  • one whole banana
  • a proprietary whey protein and fiber powder
  • choice of milk
  • and ice (in the Orange Mango Banana Blend, NakedĀ® Juice is also added).

That is certainly a very simple ingredient list and I think the drinks will provide a great healthy alternative for busy people searching for more balanced beverage options. I would probably give one a try if I was in a tight spot and near a Starbucks.

Other discount coffee purveyors such as Dunkin’ Donuts and McDonald’s already have smoothies or are planning them. This foray into smoothies is yet another change for Starbucks who has been undergoing a company-wide revival of sorts. Former CEO Howard Schultz returned in January to take over the helm once again, the company pulled the plug on its warm breakfast sandwiches and recently announced that it plans to close 600 company-operated stores.

The drinks will be available starting Tuesday, July 15 at Starbucks stores in the U.S. and Canada. A 16-ounce cup will retail for $3.75 to $3.95, depending on the location.
