Epicurean Pizza PeelIt seems kind of silly to get excited about something like a cutting board but I am currently experiencing at least some form of mild elation with my new Epicurean cutting board.

I picked up a Epicurean pizza peel recently while on vacation and I’ve waited to write about it until I got a chance to use it a few times. Yes, I can cut and prepare foods on it. Big deal right? Well, I’ve destroyed my fair share of plastic boards during my many kitchen misadventures and I figured it was time to make an investment in a quality product.

The nice gal at the kitchen store where I bought the pizza peel explained to me the interesting story behind Epicurean. It turns out that Epicurean started out as a contractor specializing in building custom skate parks (as in skateboarding). They found that the material that is used for the skate parks also worked well for cutting surfaces. They founded Epicurean Cutting Surfaces as a way to reduce waste from the excess material and sell “professional-grade cutting surfaces for the residential kitchen.”

Plastic boards seem to stain easily and melt quickly if bumped against a hot surface; and a good, sharp knife can destroy a cheap board pretty quickly. I figure a cutting board made from the same material that can hold up to countless hours of angst-filled teenagers skating on it can easily withstand any and all abuse I might put it through.

Made from layers of paper soaked in a food-safe resin, the cutting boards cutting surfaces come in many different shapes and sizes to fit your application or needs. There are boards for the BBQ, Camping, Carving, and any other cutting application you can think of. I’ve got my eye on the chef series for my next purchase.

  1. Mr T Says:

What about the good old wood cutting boards?

I thought I read somewhere that they had natural bacteria killing properties.

I have a glass one now that sucks for tactile feed back (feels like its going to break) but very easy to clean up.
