Thousands of Kids Poisoned by Tobacco Products Each Year

Researchers are concerned that new candy-shaped dissolvable tobacco products could add to children’s risk of accidental tobacco poisoning in the United States.

A recent study that investigated reports to U.S. poison control centers from 2006 through 2008 showed that 13,705 children younger than age six were accidentally poisoned by tobacco products. Cigarettes were the most common cause, then smokeless tobacco products. More than 70 percent of the victims were under a year old.

As little as 1 milligram of nicotine ingested by an infant or small child can cause nausea and vomiting, while larger doses could lead to weakness, convulsions or maybe even fatal respiratory arrest. The study found that cigarettes or filter tips were responsible for almost 10,600 of the cases, so it’s important to clear cigarette butts from ashtrays etc.

It all comes down to being a better parent and being aware of what your kids are doing. And even then, accidents happen.
