CPR saves lives. That we know. But two new studies from the U.S. and Europe find that hands-only CPR may be best when trying to save the life of a victim of cardiac arrest.

Cardiologist Dr. Myron “Mike” Weisfeldt, physician in chief at The Johns Hopkins Hospital and director of the Department of Medicine at Hopkins’ School of Medicine, says that the new research supports the case for dropping mouth-to-mouth when trying to revive someone whose heart has stopped.

The studies were conducted between 2004 and 2009 on over 3,000 men and women who needed CPR. Survival rates were similar for adults who received CPR from bystanders, some were randomly assigned to provide only chest compressions, while others were asked to perform standard CPR with mouth-to-mouth or rescue breathing.
