Alcohol May Protect the Brain During an Accident

We are used to hearing about alcohol causing accidents, but it may actually protect the brain from a life-threatening injury when an accident occurs. So says a study published this week in Archives of Surgery.
The study: 38,000 patients with moderate to severe traumatic brain injuries who were admitted to U.S. hospitals between 2000 and 2005, 38% had alcohol in their blood. Those patients had a lower risk of dying of their injuries than those who hadn’t been drinking.
But why? They aren’t sure. Alcohol may help lower the body’s core temperature. Lower body temperatures slow cell death and swelling caused by severe brain injuries. Once they study it more, we may have more answers.
