Companies Offering Workers Money for Dieting

Would money make you lose weight? Many employers are betting they can pay you to lose weight. At least a third of U.S. companies offer financial incentives, or are planning to introduce them, to get their employees to lose weight or get healthier in other ways.

Take OhioHealth for instance, a hospital chain whose workforce is mostly overweight. Last year they embarked on a program that paid employees to wear pedometers and get paid for walking. The more they walk, the more they make, up to $500 a year. Many companies are doing similar things.

But will this really do anything to slim down America? Probably not. Food isn’t the same thing as cigarettes. It’s everywhere and bad choices are easy to make. In fact the food industry wants you to make bad choices and buy their stuff.

But maybe some of the people in these companies will learn to be healthier.
