It’s better to be preemptive than suffer problems later. If the police could magically know when a crime will happen, they could intercede and wallah, no crime. It isn’t that easy with crime, but with health we can prevent bad things from happening and in a sense control our future.
If Americans would cut their sodium intake to the level recommended by experts, the country would save about $18 billion in annual health care costs. Plus, quality of life would improve for millions of people, according to a Rand Corp. study. $32 billion annually.
About a third of adults suffer from hypertension, and one big factor is that sodium consumption is so high. The study estimates that meeting national sodium guidelines could eliminate 11 million cases of high blood pressure and extend the lives of those people.
We can see the future very clearly in this case. So we can change it.
