Death rate for children under 5 declines

8.8 million children die every year before the age of five. 40% of them are in India, Nigeria and Congo, according to the U.N. children’s agency.
Now new data from UNICEF shows a continuing decline in the death rate for this age. The trend has been ongoing for the last two decades. However UNICEF says the global rate of improvement is still not enough to reach the U.N. Millennium Development Goal of a two-thirds reduction in under-five child mortality between 1990 and 2015.
The latest data suggests that Africa and Asia account for 93% of all under-five deaths. In South Africa, under-five mortality has increased since 1990 and they have the highest number of women with HIV, suggesting that the health of a child is inextricably linked to the health of its mother.
