FDA urges doctors to report misleading drug ads

Could it be that the tide is turning and that the FDA is beginning to have our interests at heart? I’m not so quick to praise them, but this is a good start. The FDA will begin asking doctors to keep an eye out for misleading drug advertisements as part of the agency’s latest effort to police the pharmaceutical industry’s multibillion-dollar marketing machine.

The agency urges doctors to report ads and sales pitches that violate FDA rules. Drug companies are legally required to present a balanced picture of a drug’s benefits and risks in promotions, though critics charge that many TV and magazine ads fail to do this.

This gets doctors keeping an eye out as the FDA doesn’t have the staff to do it. I’ll remain skeptical of this one. The FDA has fooled us many times after all. But it’s a good idea. Now they just need to keep doing good things like this.
