Filed under Wellness by Paul on September 15th, 2006

The FDA is warning consumers of an outbreak of E.coli traced to packages of fresh spinach. The outbreak has already killed one person and left 49 others sick in nine states. The first E.coli case was reported August 23rd.

E.coli causes severe diarrhea lasting up to 10 days. Most healthy adults can recover completely within a week, while some people can develop a form of kidney failure called Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (HUS). HUS can cause damage to blood cells and the kidneys and is potentially fatal. To date, 8 cases of HUS have been reported with this outbreak.

Other states affected include Connecticut, Idaho, Indiana, Michigan, New Mexico, Oregon, Washington, and Utah.
