Honda Develops Experimental Walking Assist Device
As the largest engine maker in the world, Honda is probably best known for their cars and motorcycles. Honda also has a strong Research & Development robotics program which has produced the ASIMO among other innovations.
It isn’t any big surprise then that Honda would develop a robotic waking assist device for people. The device will be used as a walking aid for the elderly and other people with weakened leg muscles. The device is designed for people who are still capable of walking on their own.
Honda began research on the walking assist device in 1999 with a goal to provide more people with the freedoms of mobility that many of us take for granted. The device weighs 2.8kg and is powered by a Lithium ion battery that should provide a charge of about 2 hours (when operated at 4.5km/hour walking).
The device was showcased last week at the International Trade Fair on Barrier Free Equipments & Rehabilitation for the Elderly & the Disabled (BARRIER FREE 2008) at Intex Osaka.
