New breathalyzer detects lung cancer
Scientists in Israel have developed a breathalyzer that they think can detect lung cancer. In a few years it could revolutionize the way that we fight the disease.
Similar tests already exist, but those tests require a pretreatment of the breath in order to detect it. That pretreatment adds time to the procedure, makes it more complicated and costs more money. The Israeli breathalyzer doesn’t require any pretreatments though. In a study conducted by the team, with 56 healthy volunteers and 40 people who were known to have lung cancer were tested. 33 distinct biomarkers set the people with lung cancer apart from those who had healthy lungs. Now they just need to see how early it can detect it.
