Not So Obvious Heartburn TriggersMore than 60 million people experience heartburn at least once a month. For some heartburn can be a constant problem. Some causes are obvious. They are the usual suspects. Chili dogs, chocolate cake, etc. But heartburn isn’t all about food. If you have constant heartburn, it can be hard to track down the real culprit. So lets take a look at some not so obvious causes.

You wouldn’t expect smoking to cause heartburn, but it can. Smoking can weaken the valve between the stomach and esophagus causing stomach acid to flow back into the esophagus.

Pills are another problem. When used regularly, drugs like ibuprofen or naproxen can trigger heartburn. Even antibiotics, calcium channel blockers, bronchodilators such as albuterol, osteoporosis drugs, and some sedatives.

Fish oils. They are hailed as a natural way to manage heart disease, depression, and other health conditions, but they can also cause heartburn. Not the fish, just the oil.

Of course there’s stress and a bunch of other causes as well. Look for these and other not so obvious triggers and get a handle on heartburn.
