Progress in Heart Disease while Cancer Stalls

Filed under Wellness by Paul on September 13th, 2006

I don’t seem to worry as much about the threat of heart disease as I do cancer. I feel that science will overcome most of the issues related to heart disease in my lifetime. I am confident that things like gene therapy, clot-dissolving drugs, and the knowledge we have on diet and nutrition will hopefully all but eliminate heart disease in the next 20 years.

Cancer on the other hand does cause me some concern.

The overall cancer death rate actually had been climbing slightly for years. Only in the past two years has it fallen a bit — due mostly to declines in tobacco use that began decades ago.

This lack of progress persists despite research spending from the National Cancer Institute approaching $30 billion a year and the “War on Cancer” declared by President Nixon 35 years ago.

I guess there is only so much a person can do from a prevention standpoint as it relates to cancer. What it really boils down to is that we should enjoy life, eat well, and be happy.
