Quitting Smoking May Raise Diabetes Risk
Related: Diabetes, Quitting Smoking, Risk, study
According to a new study, people who quit smoking are at high risk of developing type 2 diabetes after they quit. This is likely due to weight gain after quitting. But experts warn that the benefits of quitting smoking far outweigh the risk of developing diabetes, a disease that can be treated with diet, exercise, and medication.
The study followed about 11,000 middle-aged people who did not have diabetes over a nine-year period. 45% of them were smokers. Compared to those who had never smoked, those who quit smoking during the study had a 73% increased risk for type 2 diabetes three years after quitting.
