Red Wine May Protect Brain From Stroke Damage
Drinking Red wine may protect the brain from damage following a stroke, according to a new study. Researchers from Johns Hopkins University fed mice a small dose of resveratrol, a compound found in the skins and seeds of red grapes. Two hours later, researchers induced a stroke in the mice by cutting off their blood supply to the brain.
The mice that ate resveratrol suffered significantly less brain damage than those that did not take the substance. This suggests that resveratrol increases levels of the enzyme heme oxygenase, which protects the brain’s nerve cells from damage. After a stroke, the brain can block damage to its cells because of the increased levels of this enzyme.
So drink up.
