State booster-seat laws reduce children’s injuries

It seems like common sense, but a new study finds that booster-seat laws can sharply reduce the number of children injured in car accidents. Traffic injuries among kids ages 4 to 6 dropped 18% in New York after a state law requiring booster seats took effect in 2005. The study is the first to compare traffic injury rates before and after a state booster-seat law.

The researchers saw no decrease in injury rates for younger children, because car seats are already required for them. Right now forty-seven states and the District of Columbia require booster seats.

  • The researchers also that the Booster Seat law did not affect the injury rate of the younger children. It can be justified by the fact, that law already requires car seats for the infants.
