The Spleen May Help Your Heart
The spleen has always seemed pretty useless. You can live without it. Many people do. But some new research suggests that the spleen plays a bigger role in the immune system than we thought.
In mice, scientists found that the spleen serves as a home for a type of white blood cell that scavenges dead tissue and helps produce inflammation, which helps healing. The researchers discovered that the spleen actually helps the heart recover from disease.
This finding may help us to understand the immune system better and learn how to boost it.
