TONIC – Clothes with a Cause

TONIC - Clothes with a CauseI wrote previously about my successes in ridding my mailbox of unwanted junk mail using GreenDimes. Well, it’s been over six months and my mailbox is still thankfully very clean. It turns out the good folks at GreenDimes who helped me clean up my mailbox have another venture called TONIC that sells clothing in order to help out a good cause.

TONIC is an nonprofit organization that allocates a portion of its revenue from selling t-shirts to various causes that support the environment, education, poverty and social welfare. This means if you but a t-shirt at TONIC you might be helping build schools in India, or send bed nets to prevent malaria in Africa, or even plant some trees. You can see a list of the current causes here.

“We hand over a big chunk of our revenue, 40% on average, to the people who need it most. The good news is that we’re not in competition for dollars you donate to other worthy non-profits. We just sell you stylish stuff and support meaningful causes along the way. See the difference you can make exercising your purchasing power.”

Each TONIC product contributes to a particular cause and new products are released four times a year to match a new set of specific causes. Once the goal has been met for a cause the product will no longer be available and they move on to the next cause. You can track the revenue for specific causes here.

So if you like new t-shirts and you care about social change then you should check out TONIC and shop for a Cause. The t-shirts are even made from a 70/30 blend of bamboo fiber and cotton so you can feel good about buying a sustainable material. I’ve got my eye on a sweet “Scary Douglas Tee” and it looks like I can help out the “The Global Fund for Children” at the same time. Very nice!

    GreenDimes here,

Thanks for the fantastic GreenDimes testimonial (can I use it?) and the positive review of our latest venture Tonic. Just for clarity, we are for-profit but give a significant chunk to non-profits using fair trade/sustainable materials.

    Thanks again

    Hi Sanjiv,

Yes, you may use the testimonial. I already tell everybody I know about GreenDimes and TONIC.

  • I created a company in memory of my 28 year old sister that died from breast cancer that supports giving back through shopping. Uptown Liz (www.uptownliz.com) promotes products from companies whose proceeds directly give back to charitable organizations. Thank you for doing your part to promote making a difference to those who are less fortunate.
